Chickadee is a happy little accident. In 2017, we were basically closing up shop. The herd was reduced to 10 does...special girls that we didn't want to let go. We had one buck (kid!) left on the farm just in case we decided to breed again. Then, in September...we decided to move. Knowing this move would be a long one, as it was somewhat unplanned, we reached out to Jill at Sinai Thunder to see if she could 'board' the herd. Really...the question was could you TAKE the herd...because none of us thought we'd land on a farm again. So, she agreed (she's wonderful and such a blessing) and the goats were delivered to her farm in September 2017. It wasn't long after that, we had moved to Georgia, and Jill sent me a text of Pigeon's RATHER wide belly and developing udder. OOPS! I plugged in the external hard drive that housed our goat records, and there it was. Throne, little baby buck, had been 'let out' of his pen one day while I ran errands. Sure enough, he managed to breed Pigeon that day.... So, on New Year's Eve 2017...at Jill's farm...Chickadee was born. Chickadee is a really cool blending of both parents. She very strongly resembles Crown Jewel, her paternal granddam, in type. It's hard to say where the attitude really came from, because both the Kirby line and the Princess line carry some very strong personalities! We look forward to seeing what this little surprise can do! Chick freshened flawlessly for her first time with a single buck kid (not unexpected with this breeding). I have been milking her since she just had the one, to keep things healthy and productive. I can already comment (this is two days in) that her udder is exceptionally soft and pliable with good teat size and orifices and she is milking over 2 lbs a day on top of feeding her kid. I'm also happy to report that our wild child is being a very good girl on the stanchion, just like her mom was. The second freshening was as flawless as the first, Chickadee kidded with zero assistance. Her udder is improving nicely. Teat size has really increased as has capacity. I love her division of the halves and how nicely it's picking up. She is an excellent milker!! |
